An opinion must be based on the alternative options & the determination of the Japanese to fight without compromise defending the pacific islands & elsewhere showed that the defence of their homeland would also demand a huge price in human life. However that is fine said from a western perpective, quite what a Japanese might reply I have no idea.......
Depends on what you'd accept as reasonable. They were definitely justified within their own agenda, or they would never have done it in the first place.
But "justified" is quite different than "morally acceptable", so you might want to clarify your question.
