During the American Civil War, the President of the Union (i.e., the United States), Abraham Lincoln, had one persistently pursued goal, namely, preservation of the Union. As the war progressed, the abolition of slavery became another desperately sought goal of Lincoln and many other Northerners, not to overlook many of the enslaved Americans in the South.

This required the U.S. to become greatly involved in world affairs, propping up questionable or nefarious regimes simply to prevent them from falling to Soviet communism. These interventionist policies led to U.S. involvement in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War as well as numerous small scale conflicts such as incursions into various Central American countries and the bombing of Libya, invasion of Grenada and others.
They are the southern states that seceded from the US and formed the Confederate States of America in 1861. Their action led to the US Civil War as the North sought to end what they called an illegal rebellion. By 1865, the South had been defeated and the states all eventually rejoined the Union.
