The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, aka Jug, was designed by Alexander Nikolaievich Prokofiev de Seversky [June 7, 1894-August 24, 1974] and Alexander Kartveli [1896-1974]. Its first flight took place on May 6, 1941. It was the largest single-seat fighter plane in World War II.

Which band leader died in an air crash over the English Channel during World War 2?

The bandleader you refer to is Alton Glenn Miller, (known primarily as Glenn Miller), who was the most popular Big Band leader of the era. His many hits, including "In the Mood", "String of Pearls", "Little Brown Jug", Moonlight Serenade (the band's first major hit and their signature tune), "Pennsylvania 6-5000" (the phone number of an old apartment he and his wife lived in before fame and fortune), "Tuxedo Junction", and of course "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" are popular even today.Miller was an Army Major during WWII, and convinced a General to let him bring his band together (most were already enlisted in the Army anyway) and tour the bases overseas in the war zones to boost morale. The General agreed, and Miller soon began hosting many shows for G.I.'s in England and other countries. On December 15, 1944, Miller left England aboard a U.S. Army Air Force UC-64 Norseman to fly to Paris. He left ahead of his band in order to perform advance logistics work for a Christmas show they were doing for the Allied forces in Paris, which had recently liberated the city. His plane never arrived in Paris.Miller's plane went missing, presumably over the English Channel, and no wreckage or bodies were ever found on land or sea. To this day, he is still listed as Missing in Action, presumed dead. There has been much speculation, rumor and theory (conspiracy and otherwise) over the years as to exactly what happened to Miller's plane. Theories abound as to whether his plane went down as a result of friendly fire (accidental AA or a victim of Allied planes dropping bombs over the Channel prior to landing in England), weather (it was dark and foggy), or simple mechanical failure. Like the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, it has remained one of the world's most enduring mysteries.

A Knight to Remember?

It is easy to pick up a knight's costume from a local retailer or any one of several online costumers, which sell a variety of mass-produced knight's costumes ranging from thirty to over a hundred dollars in cost. Authentic replica costumes available through specialty shops will cost you even more. An authentic replica of a chain mail shirt will run you over 300 dollars, while a pair of steel greaves costs $82. Online costume shops also sell those crucial knightly accessories, such as shields, swords, gauntlets and helmets. Or you can buy a couple of rolls of duct tape, scrounge up a large rectangle of fabric and make your own distinctive knight's costume for under ten dollars. If you are making a knight's costume for a child, you will want to buy a large jug of milk before you start. An empty clean milk jug with the cap end cut off and covered in silver duct tape makes a perfect helmet for a smaller child. You will probably want to do a little research and find out exactly what a surcoatis before you select your fabric. There are very minimal sewing skills required for making a simple surcoat. Choose an emblem to either draw on the front of the fabric with an indelible marking pen, or you can sew an emblem cut out of fabric or card stock to the front and back of the surcoat. Every knight had his personal insignia displayed on his surcoat for ease of identification, much like sports team players today have their names and numbers on their uniforms. If you are creating a knight's costume for a child, an old pair of jogging pants with the lower legs sheathed in silver duct tape, a milk jug helmet, a sword and shield made from cardboard covered in either duct tape or shiny aluminum foil, and a bright sash to fasten around the waist of the unique surcoat you created for your little knight will result in as realistic a picture as you could find in any costume shop.

Which was the fastest piston engined aircraft of World War 2?

Sorry, but the P-51H was never operational in WWII. There were a LOT of fast aircraft in WWII, but most were not operational until AFTER the war. The fastest aircraft of the U.S. arsenal during the war was undoubtedly the Lockheed P-80, and even though it was never used in combat, they DID send a pair to Italy just before the end of the war. They were NOT in squadron service, however. So, that would make the fastest operational prop-driven aircraft the Repuiblic P-47M "Thunderbolt", which was used in combat by the 56th Fighter group to run after the German jets then coming into service. It was basically a P-47N fuselage with the big G.E. CH-5 turbocharger with the big R-2800C engine, but with the small wings of the "D" series. They only built about 150 of them. The "M" was easily capable of between 475-480mph. P-51H, Speed 487 MPH.

How can you measure out half a pint using a 1.75 pint jug and a pint jug?

If A = 1.75 pint jug, and B = 1 pint jug 1) Fill 1.75 pint jug [then afterwards A = 1.75 B = 0] 2) From it pour 1 pint into the other jug [A = 0.75 B = 1.00] 3) Empty 1 pint jug, and into it pour the 0.75 pints [A = 0 B = 0.75] 4) Fill 1.75 pint jug again [A = 1.75 B = 0.75] 5) Pour enough (0.25 pint) from it to fill the 1 pint jug [A = 1.50 B = 1.00] 6) Finally, empty the 1 pint jug, and from the remaining 1.5 pints in the 1.75 pint jug, pour 1 pint of it into the 1 pint jug [A = 0.5 B = 1.00] So in six stages there will be half a pint in the 1.75 pint jug!
