Homes, businesses and factories all had some curtain or even painted windows that wouldn't allow light to be seen from outside at night as a protection from night bombing raids. So, as soon as the lights were turned on the blackout curtains were drawn to make sure no light was visible to an outside source. If you look around at some of the really old factoies you'll notice some of the window panes are still painted.

How did they blackout the windows in world war 2?

During World War II, many cities implemented blackout measures to prevent enemy aircraft from spotting urban areas at night. Residents covered windows with heavy curtains, blackout paint, or sheets of dark paper to eliminate any light escaping from buildings. Additionally, outdoor lights were turned off or shaded, and vehicles were required to use dimmed headlights. These measures aimed to enhance civilian safety and reduce the effectiveness of aerial bombings.
