The Vietnam war began as a war of nationalism, with the Vietnamese their French colonial powers for independence following World War II. The United States became involved in the struggle out of fear that the new country would be Communist. The Vietnamese scored a decisive victory over the French at Dienbienphu in 1954, but the United States retained its interest in Vietnam. A conference in Geneva provisionally divided Vietnam into the North under Communist-backed President Ho Chi Minh and the South under American-backed President Ngo Dinh Diem, with elections on the issue of reunification scheduled for 1956. Probably the most important impetus for hostilities was Diem's decision to cancel the elections out of fear that he would lose.O SNAP GTG.
Saigon
There is a lot of major events from 1860-1865. I suggest that you google "major events from 1860-1865".
Four war events that I consider major are 1) the continuation of US involvement in Vietnam from 1970 to 1975, 2) the Yom Kippur War of 1973 in which Israel fought Egypt and Syria, 3) The Lebanese Civil War which began in 1975 and lasted through 1980 and beyond, and 4) the beginning of the Soviet-Afghan War in 1980. There were many other conflicts between 1970 and 1980, some of them tied in with the Cold War and some not, but I regard these as minor instead of major. Almost forgot.....5) The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, one of several wars fought between India and Pakistan.
The Tet Offensive .

what President Johnson major contribution in office?
Army General William Westmoreland, who was the supreme commmander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam, asked Johnson in 1965 for more troops. This widened the war and the first major battle in Vietnam was the Battle of Ia Drang in the Pleiku Province of South Vietnam.
The end of the Vietnam War due to the fall of Saigon
Major goals of President Johnson's Great Society were to help end poverty and to end discrimination in voter registration.
Part of the reason that Richard Nixon was elected to the presidency in 1968 was to end the Vietnam War. However, with that said, presidents Johnson and Nixon created for the US congress in foreign affairs a source of comfort and aid to the position of commander in chief. Neither president sought to involve the US congress in major foreign policy decisions. Here Johnson had given Nixon a headstart. The major difference with regards to the Vietnam war was that President Johnson had sought to win the war, while Nixon sought to end the war on his terms if possible.
