It was a tactic based upon the shock, which required that the attacking units were to arrive on the enemy in a tight formation in order to make good the strike. But the rifled guns made this tactics obsolete, although both sides insisted on using it, with the outcome of awful losses among the units engaged , not realising for a long time that the fire had become overwhelming compared to the power of impact.
