In general military forces are made up of the citizens of a nation who either volunteer to serve in their forces or are conscripted to serve in the forces. In the US the forces are made up of the enlisted and the commissioned officers and the Secretary of the Armed Forces and the Chief (the President of the US). In the United Kingdom the Royal Forces belong to the Queen of the kingdom and are responsible to her or the King when there is one. The forces consist of enlisted people and the officers and the Admiralty. In Israel the forces are conscripted and there are those who enlist. They too have enlisted, conscripted and commissioned officers. During World War 2 there were also drafted/conscripted men in the forces because they needed millions of men for all the forces. After the Viet Nam War the US chose to have only enlisted personnel and commissioned officers but they reserved the right to enact the draft again if it was necessary. The men have to register for the draft even though they may not ever be drafted. Military forces consist of Naval forces, Aviation forces such as the US Air Force or the Royal Air Force, Army forces, Marine forces, recon forces (special forces), Coast Guard forces, and some countries have special intelligence forces. All these military type forces have their own structures and units. Some countries only have one military because they are too small a country or too poor.

The Red forces fought for one reason, which was to retain control once they had seized control of the country. The White Forces fought for various reasons. Some factions of the White Forces fought to oust the Bolsheviks and reinstate the tsarist monarchy. Some White Forces fought to oust the Bolsheviks and institute a constitutional democratic government. Some White Forces fought to oust the Bolsheviks and institute a military dictatorship. Then there were the Green Forces, which seem to be forgotten. They were anarchists, but not in the sense of a lawless society. They fought just to be left alone by any Russian government.
During the Pacific Theater of World War II, particularly in the island hopping campaign, approximately 49,000 American soldiers died. This campaign involved a series of amphibious assaults on strategically important islands held by Japanese forces, aiming to secure bases for further advances. The casualties varied significantly by battle, with some islands, like Iwo Jima and Okinawa, experiencing particularly high losses. Overall, the island hopping strategy was crucial in gaining ground in the Pacific despite the heavy toll on American forces.
Japanese POWs (prisoners of war) during World War II generally did not fight for the Allies. Instead, they were held captive by Allied forces, primarily in the Pacific Theater. While there were some exceptions of individuals who may have defected or collaborated for various reasons, the majority of Japanese POWs were not integrated into Allied military efforts and instead faced harsh conditions in captivity.
