1. The first families were having to harvest and plant without the main man or sons helping which made it long and hard winters and in some cases the only reason they survived was because the army was sending them thier husands or sons paycheck

2. This was the 1850-1860 their was not advanced medicine so often a time to save a person they would have to amputate often with the only painkiller alcohol.
