First Bull Run (Manassas), the war's first pitched battle.
We shall never know what Brigadier-General Barnard Bee meant when he shouted "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall!", during a tense moment of combat, because he was mortally wounded later in the day.
The official version claims that he was praising Jackson for holding his position under great difficulty, and added "Rally behind the Virginians!"
Others claim that he was criticising him for not coming across to help his own brigade.
Either way, the nickname stuck, and Bee died without knowing that he had christened a legend.
