By the end of World War II, only a few British aircraft carriers survived the conflict, notably the HMS Victorious, HMS Implacable, and HMS Eagle. Many of the other carriers were either sunk, heavily damaged, or decommissioned due to the war's toll. The surviving carriers continued to serve in various capacities in the post-war period, reflecting the evolution of naval warfare and aircraft technology.
During the Battle of Midway in June 1942, out of the approximately 3,000 Japanese sailors who were aboard the four aircraft carriers involved (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu), around 1,000 survived the battle. The significant losses were due to the sinking of these carriers and the intense air attacks from American forces. The battle marked a crucial turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
None were necessary since the British Isles provided plentiful air bases. However, in the Mediterranean theater, US escort carriers (aka jeep carriers or CVE's) were used to support amphibious landings. These were small aircraft carriers capable of operating about 30 aircraft each, which left the larger US fleet carriers with 70-80 aircraft each available for the Pacific theater.

Carriers at War happened in 1991.
Carriers at War was created in 1991.
The British lost 4 of their original carriers (Courageous, Glorious, Ark Royal, Eagle & Hermes). In addition they lost 3 escort carriers (Audacity, Avenger and Dasher). Of these the Courageous, Ark Royal, Eagle, Audacity and Avenger were lost to U-boat torpedoes. Hermes was destroyed by Japanese carrier aircraft, Glorious was sunk by German battlecruisers and Dasher exploded during refueling. A further escort carrier, Nabob, was torpedoed by a U-boat and declared a constructive total loss giving no further service as a carrier, but was converted to a merchant ship and survived the war in that state.
Approximately 3.5 million British soldiers served in World War II, and it is estimated that around 1 million of them were killed or went missing during the conflict. Therefore, the number of British soldiers who survived the war is estimated to be around 2.5 million. This figure includes those who were wounded but ultimately returned home after the war ended in 1945.
Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo canceled a third wave of bombers, refused to seek out the aircraft carriers, and turned back home because he feared an American Counterstrike. Because of this, the U.S. battle fleet was knocked out of commission for nearly six months but it survived. So the answer is, The Aircraft Carriers.

During the Falklands War in 1982, the British Royal Navy deployed two aircraft carriers: HMS Invincible and HMS Hermes. These carriers played a crucial role in launching air strikes and providing air support during the conflict. The Argentine Navy did not have any operational aircraft carriers at the time.
