In the US leisure activities were not effected. Life went on as usual. The only difference were topics of conversation (humor) during picnics or work, or recreation..."anyone see any mushroom clouds yet...?" "No...good, let's go fishing!" If a massive sounding sonic boom hit...folks would sometimes wonder (or look out their windows) to see if their was a mushroom cloud. The loud sounding boom could've been an atomic weapon going off...meaning someone pushed that darn button (the war's on!).
If someone refused to answer questions posed by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), they could face legal repercussions, including being held in contempt of Congress. This could result in fines or imprisonment. Additionally, their refusal could damage their reputation and career, as the committee often publicly identified individuals as uncooperative or suspicious. Historical instances show that such refusals could lead to increased scrutiny and potential blacklisting in various industries.
Those who refused to answer questions could have several things happen to them. For one, they could held in contempt, for which there were legal penalties. For another, they could be blacklisted by their profession. There were ten Hollywood writers and directors who refused to answer the House Un-American Activities Committee's questions; the "Hollywood Ten" believed it was unconstitutional for the committee to ask them about their political beliefs. They were all blacklisted -- unable to find work, since no-one in Hollywood would hire them; and they were all found guilty of Contempt of Congress, and sentenced to serve between six and twelve months in prison.
all the above
