In 1934, the Nazi leader of Germany, Adolph Hitler, increased the basic range-of-power and size of the Nazi Party itself. While personally assuming the responsibilities of the German Head-of-State office in addition to his Chancellor's duties, Hitler also ensured that all police services were controlled by the Party. In addition, he acted mercilessly to reduce the power of a growing political competitor, namely, the 'S.A.' organization, which had helped the Nazis in their initial upsurge into political significance in the nation.
