In WW I the soldiers spent most of their time in trenches. It was very muddy.
When not engaged in battle, Canadian soldiers in the trenches typically passed the time by engaging in various activities to maintain morale and cope with the harsh conditions. A typical day included routine chores such as cleaning weapons, maintaining their living quarters, and preparing food. Soldiers often played cards, wrote letters to loved ones, and shared stories to distract themselves from the stress of warfare. Additionally, they would sometimes participate in brief training exercises or drills to stay prepared for combat.

During WWI, there were long periods where neither side gained any ground. While this was happening, the soldiers spent their time in the trenches with not much to do.
The soldiers would play games of cards (if they were lucky to have a set.) Others would write letters home, and also read letters their families have sent. Some prayed day and night for life. They all sang silly songs and watched silly show/performances to keep spirits high.the soldiers were either sleeping or merely fighting it was tough times and they could not just stay still sometimes they would try and makes the trenches cleaner as the had to be under very under hygeinic standards which led to trench foot and rats caused by dead corpses

They didn't for the most part. soldiers in trenches especially. It was more important to save yourself than to stay clean.
it provided protection from bullets. the only bad thing is they had to crouch most of the time and mortar shells could get in.
The trenches were in the front lines of the war zone, they were dug by the soldiers who then both fought from and lived in these trenches for long periods of time. They were small but not as small as we would think. They were dug in a zigzag pattern so that if an enemy breached the defenses and entered the trench he would not be able to kill a lot of soldiers since they would not be in a straight line.
During WW1, the activities that soldiers did in their spare were to play cards, write in diaries, write letters home, or take some to sleep. Trenches were very unpleasant places for soldiers because the environment was often muddy and often had the stench of rotting corpses.
To pass the time, what did soldiers in the civil war do?
During World War I, many soldiers had to fight in the trenches. These were unhygienic, deadly, cramped, and frightening. In almost every account, soldiers talk about their initial feelings of fear upon arriving in the trenches, and how that anxiety lasted throughout the war, and sometimes beyond.

The British and ANZAC soldiers usually ate 'ANZAC' biscuits because they lasted for a long time and tinned meat and vegetables. The ANZAC & British armies often threw food from their trenches to the Turkish trenches and vica versa, but the Turks usually threw the food back because it was not fresh and tasted bad but the British most always took the Turk's food if it was given to them.
