Land based aircraft like the PB4Y1 Liberator were an effective tool used in the the Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) role. There was a problem caused by the range limitations of land based aircraft called the "Atlantic Gap". The convoys were exposed to long stretches without air cover. The solution was the Escort Carrier used to screen convoys. Using TBM Avengers working as hunter/killer teams with the "hunter" carrying radar and the "killer" armed with rockets and mines they were a potent ASW force. The USS Bogue and its escorts sank seven subs on its first escort assignment. The U-Boat threat was real. In 1940 the Germans sank 520 merchant ships alone. The British had even used Catapult Aircraft Merchantman which had a Hawker Sea Hurricane aboard to fly a one way mission againt U-Boats. The Allies also were ahead in radar and sonar, and were able to detect U-boats either on the surface or under the water. Depth charge attacks were improved with the invention of the headgehog. Destroyers also worked in teams, one locating the U-boat with sonor and directing the second to a correct attack position. U-boats had operated right of the American coast. Early in the war almost any aircraft that could fly would patrol the US coast. Training aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan were fitted with 500 Lb. bombs and flew along the coast. The AT-6 was not designed to be used as a bomber. U-boats had used the city lights to check their location and skyline their targets. Cities along the coast went into blackouts to help prevent such events. When more destroyers were needed the US built a smaller ship called a DE (destroyer Escort). The British built a smaller ship for the same duty called a Corvett. The PBY was also a big help, though slow they could fly a long range and could carry either bombs or torpedos. Many of the merchant ships also had guns mounted upon them.
The United States used convoys to get merchant ships across the ocean when u-boats were in the water. The United States used convoys to get merchant ships across the ocean when u-boats were in the water.
America just warned German saying if they continued, then the U.S.A would step into the war. German really didn't want America in the war because Germany knew that America would just end the war. However, the Germans did continue to blow up America boats to block food and other supplies from reaching Great Britain. They were trying to starve Britain before America could enter the war, but the plan failed.
The Convoy System- escort ships off Atlantic in groups
The use of the convoy system protecting merchant ships as they crossed the Atlantic , airplanes for reconnaissance , radar , depth charges .
U-boat warfare was the German response to the British blockade.
Enemy submarines, German U-boats had to stay on the surface most of the time due to the use of sonar. This made it easier to spot the U-boats, especially during daytime.
The Allies, including Great Britain, USA, Russia and Italy all had submarines during WW1. In general they were not nearly as advanced or successful as the German U-boats.
American luxury ships worked together with the Triple Entente navy. A few luxury or goods ships would be grouped together with a naval ship, and the naval would provide a sort of "protection". This way, German U-Boats would less likely to attack and sink the luxury liners or goods ships.

Yes , airplanes were used to help detect U-Boats such as the PBY Catalina which was a flying-boat used to provide the eyes of a convoy and air-sea rescue .

Destroyers played a large part in anti-submarine warfare, particularly in protecting convoys.2nd asnwer:Yes, and convoys themselves were put together as a way to overcome U-boat depredation. Later in the War, aircraft were used some to spot U-Boats from the air.Warships began to be outfitted with submarine detection equipment, primarily SONAR.The US developed Depth Charges, small bombs that were tossed overboard where a submarine was lurking.
