When you wear a gas mask your main sensation is of heat and staleness (the rubber makes you sweat badly, and most of the air you breathe out builds up in the body of the mask, so you breathe it in again).

There is an unpleasant sweet rubber smell (a little like hot tarmac, but otherwise difficult to describe) but the discomfort soon makes you forget about that.

And everything looks green and dim (because of the protective plastic over your eyes).
