What did the seceded states do to rejoin the union?

They were also required to submit to military occupation. The secessionist states were divided into military districts that were headed by Union generals. Ratification of the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendments were mandatory.

The voters would elect a convention, which would adopt a new state constitution.

Finally, the state had to ratify the 14th Amendment.

After all these things had been done, the state would officially rejoin the Union.
