1. Is it a metal badge, or a cloth badge based upon a metal one? 2. Is it a badge or shoulder patch, or unit crest (battalion crest)? 3. Is it a collar insignia? During the Vietnam War, for the US Army, "wings" signified aviation; "crossed rifles" indicated infantry; a "lightning bolt" and a "small shield" hints at being a battalion crest (unit crest). Combined altogether indicates either an "in-country home made" badge (was was extremely common) or possibly an ARP (Aerial Rifle Platoon) platoon badge. ARPs were an authorized unit...but they may have existed only in Vietnam. ARPs and LRRPs (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) seem to be the only Vietnam War outfits that have disappeared; the Green Beret (SF), SEALS, Rangers, Recon, and Snipers still exist.
He died leading the 54th Massachussetts (coloured) Regiment at the siege of Fort Wagner in the assault of July 18, 1863, after having reached the crest of the fort's earthworks slope.
Im not sure about the pin but "nunc et semper" means now and always in latin.
Regimental Colours generally refer to the flags carried by the regiment that has the regiment's crest or coat of arms or identification. Like the US, a regimental color guard would have a national flag and a regimental flag. These were the colors that the men rallied around and fought to protect their identity. I hope that is your answer.
I don't know, however that regiment was part of the 86th Infantry Division. It was in combat in northern Europe. The Division nickname is "Blackhawk". The division website is www.86blackhawkdiv.org There is a picture of the Division's patch on that website. See that site, you may find what you are looking for. Also wikipedia has information about the division. I found a photo of this DUI pin posted on www.usmilitariaforum.com. The post said this was a rare DUI. It is a BLUE shield with a diagonal Bar and a Lion in upper Right and a mailed fist in lower Left. The banner contains the motto "WE SHALL NOT FAIL". If the rest of the bird's feathers are fine, then the cockatiel is not unhealthy. There can be subtle differences in birds of the same species, including the length of their crest or even tail feathers. A young bird will often have a shorter crest, but it is most likely to just be the result of a slight genetic difference. A crest may also be affected during a routine moult.
