A jetty is a man-made structure, sometimes called a breakwater. They are often built to create an artificial, man-made harbor. Usually large rocks are dumped in the water to build up a wall, which curves out from the shore to enclose an area where the builders want to make a harbor, sheltered from the action of the ocean waves. Only the top of this wall extends above the water, and causes the waves to break when they reach the jetty. At least one opening is left in the jetty for ships to pass through.
