I have heard it means "left field" in German, but...

That answer is totally wrong I'm a Lingenfelter, Lingenfelter means from Lingenfeld a village in Germany, This name was given to Anstat Lingenfelder , (the first person to have the name) He lived around 1530, whom all Lingenfelders descend (Lingenfelder is how it was originally spelled), Lingenfelder means man from swampy fields in German. We also still have relatives who live in Germany who run a world renown winery. all Lingenfelters are related. no matter what anyone tells you , do the research if you have doubts and many people who have last names that sound like Lingenfelter are Lingenfelters they just have a little different spelling because of miss spelled names during military enlistment or migration , I my self have discovered several different spellings , Lincomfelter ,Linkenfelter , LingEfelter, LingAfelter and there are many more, Hope this helps
