Hanged after being found guilty of murder and conspiracy at America's first-ever war crimes trial. Wirz had been commandant of the Andersonville prison-camp in Georgia, notorious for starvation and disease, which housed 45,000 Union prisoners in the last year of the war.

Feelings ran high at this trial, just after Lincoln's assassination, and the accusations of deliberate brutality are now known to have been exaggerated. In the face of these sensational claims, Wirz was barely heard when he quoted hard evidence that he had kept appealing to the Confederate government to improve the conditions.

Nevertheless most Northerners identified Wirz with the horrors of Andersonville, and not many were sorry to see him executed.
