Saipan" On June 15, 1944, thousands of U.S. forces landed on the island of Saipan, which was a military base for Japan. The U.S. wanted to take over this island and use it as a convienent base for themselves and weaken the Japanese. Many of the people on Saipan killed themselves in fear of death at the hands of the Americans. There were terrible battles. it finally ended on July 9, 1944, but both sides suffered immense loss: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/pacific/peopleevents/p_shiroma.html: Americans suffered more than 14,000 casualties including 3,426 killed or missing. Of the 30,000 Japanese troops that defended Saipan, less than 1,000 remained alive at battle's end. Although exact numbers are not known, it is believed that close to 1,000 civilians perished at Marpi Point.
