Saipan" On June 15, 1944, thousands of U.S. forces landed on the island of Saipan, which was a military base for Japan. The U.S. wanted to take over this island and use it as a convienent base for themselves and weaken the Japanese. Many of the people on Saipan killed themselves in fear of death at the hands of the Americans. Of the 30,000 Japanese troops that defended Saipan, less than 1,000 remained alive at battle's end.
