A Federal division under Gen. Truman Seymour landed at Jacksonville on Feb. 7,1864.

They pressed on inland meeting no opposition. When they reached the village of Olustee they were attacked by a Confederate brigade led by Gen. Joseph Finegan. The Unionists were defeated and withdrew under cover of darkness.
