What happened during the invasion of Nanjing?

Prior to the general outbreak of World War II, war raged between China and Japan. In late 1937, Japanese forces occupied the important Chinese city of Nanjing (or, Nanking). Although accounts differ, and the event is still debated today, all sides agree that numerous atrocities and killings were carried out over a period of two months by Japanese troops against the unprotected citizens of the city. This event is still often described as the "Rape of Nanjing."

Japanese soldiers, acting on direct orders from their superiors (including Prince Asaka, uncle of Hirohito), deliberately slaughtered over 300,000 innocent people in and around the city of Nanking. It was perhaps the largest single massacre in recorded history.
