Under the terms of the surrender agreement at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, Confederate soldiers were allowed to return home peacefully after surrendering their arms. They were granted parole, which meant they would not be prosecuted for treason if they adhered to the terms of the agreement. Additionally, they were provided with rations and allowed to keep their horses for personal use. This lenient treatment aimed to promote reconciliation and healing following the Civil War.
