Grant gave Lee surprisingly generous terms. If the men would hand in their weapons, and sign the pledge never to take up arms against the United States again, they could go home in peace, and there would be no hangings, jailings, or other persecution.
It was a solemn and historic moment that brought out the noble side in both of them. Lee was facing up to defeat in a manly and responsible way, and Grant felt he could afford to offer generous terms. Lee accepted this, and was able to dissuade some of his officers from taking to the hills and carrying on guerrilla warfare.
