Japan was steadily on a path toward ruling the world. They felt they were the ultimate race. The sun literally rose and set on their country which ~ in their mindset ~ made them 1 step away from gods. If you read the 1st 77 pages of James Bradely's 'Flyboys'. The information he has there describes the steps that the Japanese government put the men through to learn to shut off their feelings. They raped pillaged amd murdered millions (approximately 18 million civilians alone) of Chinese along their quest. Not to mention the attack on Pearl Harbor which had been preceded by a similar attack in Russia.

Prior to the formal entry of the United States into World War II, President Roosevelt and his administration took various steps to stop Japanese aggression in Asia. Diplomatic talks were one such step. Another was the imposition of an oil embargo upon the imperial island-nation.
Lack of resources as an island that had to import just about everything
There have been many occasions of "Japan's aggression towards Japan." For example, Okinawa can be viewed as being a site of Japanese aggression against its own people. In World War II, the island of Okinawa was used by the American troops as a passage into the mainland, and by the Japanese mainland as a "disposable" island to merely impede the American troops. The Japanese army had no regard for the Okinawan citizens, who were driven out of the safety of their shelters and caves when the American troops arrived. There have also been incidents of senseless killings of the civilians by the Japanese troops during that time, because although Okinawa was an official part of Japan at the time, historically, Okinawans have been treated as the minority, as they speak with a different dialect and have a distinct culture.

The Japanese
The League of Nations was the precursor to the United Nations. The greatest failing of the League of Nations is its absolute inaction in response to aggression prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.
One good example - maybe the best example - was the interment of thousands of loyal, tax paying Japanese-Americans during World War II.
