"Diversionary" refers to actions or strategies intended to divert attention away from a particular issue, situation, or problem. This term is often used in political or military contexts, where leaders may engage in diversionary tactics to distract the public or opponents from domestic issues or failures. By shifting focus to external conflicts or other activities, the goal is to unify support or deflect criticism.
The Allies employed a sophisticated deception operation known as Operation Fortitude to mislead the Germans about the location and timing of the D-Day landings. They created a fictitious army group, the First United States Army Group (FUSAG), led by General George Patton, and staged fake radio traffic, inflatable tanks, and misleading intelligence reports to suggest an invasion at Pas de Calais. Additionally, Allied forces conducted diversionary attacks and feigned troop movements to reinforce the illusion. This extensive misinformation led the Germans to misallocate their forces, ultimately aiding the success of the actual landings at Normandy.
Because it lulled the French into a false sense of security. We have a big strong wall facing Germany, come at us, bro. Problem was, Germany had other plans. The Ardennes Forest, in Belgium, was thought to be impenetrable by the French defense minister, Andre Maginot (coincidentally, the same guy who built the wall). But the Germans managed it, keeping their armour on the road and pushing their troops through the woods. And a funny thing happened.Germany had placed a small diversionary force in front of the Maginot Line before they went shlepping through the Ardennes, so the French were certain an attack from the front was imminent. Germany crept up behind them, and wouldn't you know it? there was a flaw in the Maginot Line - the guns, pointed at Germany, could not be turned around to defend against attackers from the rear. A (French) bloodbath ensued.
As part of an overall defensive plan for the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis hoped to see his army commanders move into United States territory - for Robert E. Lee it would be the invasion of Maryland. It was thought that the state of Maryland might break away from the Union and join the Confederacy. Morale was high in the Army of Northern Virginia, and Lee hoped to move away from war-ravaged Virgina. The idea that Europeans governments might recognize the Confederate Government was also strong in their minds.Lee had united his army along the high ground of the town of Sharpsburg, to his front ran the Antietam Creek. McClellan planned to attack Lee's left by making a diversionary attack on the right, and he opened the attack on Sept. 17th. Five separate attacks, without the use of two of the six corps diluted McClellan's advantage in numbers (80,000 Union vs 55,000 Confederate). The Union attacks were not coordinated, and rippled from the north to the south of their lines. In the south Ambrose E. Burnside tried to cross the Antietam Creek with his forces shortly after noon as part of the diversionary attack, but was beaten back twice. By 3:00, Burnside had his troops across the creek, but was met by A.P. Hill's infantry who had just completed a 17-mile forced march. Burnside's troops were forced back, and Hill's troops had stopped the last Union penetration of the day. McClellan declined to attack on the second day, Lee (who had lost nearly a quarter of his command - 22,000) began his withdraw on the night of the 18th. The Confederates had beaten back the Union's attacks, but failed to inavde Maryland, and failed to gain any European recognition.Source(s):The American Civil War (The West Point Military History Series) Thomas E. Yes there were. When the French fought the VietMinh in the 50's there were accounts of a Vietminh soldier who was captured enmeshed in parachute silk. As he was being taken to the French HQ. A French sargeant thought something suspicious and knocked the prisoner unconscious only to find that under the parachute silk lots of explosives and a manual detonation device. Seems the Vietminh soldier had intended to detonate himself inside the French HQ. During the Tet Offensive a Viet Cong Commando squad entered the American Embassy compound on what was essentially a suicide mission of a diversionary / chaos causing attack. There chances of surviving the experience were minimal and they must have known it. There are accounts of VietCong soldiers being chained with their machine guns to strategic positions. One hopes the unfortunate soldier had a say in this. Not least ( and perhaps this doesnt count as a suicide action ) North Vietnamese tank crew members could be chained to their positions in their vehicles, there are accounts of this.
The unique thing about the battle of Midway was that the U.S. Navy was able to crack the Japanese code , that the invasion of the Aleutian Islands was a diversionary move on the part of the Japanese. The main force was to launch an aerial attack on Midway,to destroy the airstrip and the shorebatteries , then the second phase would land Japanese marines onto Midway itself, killing all opposition. The U.S. Navy, aware of Japanese intentions sent its last 3 aircraft carriers (Yorktown,Enterprise,Hornet) to a point north east of Midway.ADM.Nimitz put Midway Island on full alert, to make sure the island was ready to defend itself against any aerial and naval attacks thrown at them by the Japanese. While the ships sailed from Pearl Harbor,Midway sent out some Pby-Catalinas to search for the Japanese task force which left Japan a few weeks ago, which is traveling under cover of a storm. The Japanese task force was spotted by one of the Pby's from Midway and the rest is history.

Diversionary spillways can help prevent flooding by diverting excess water away from the main dam or structure. They can also reduce the risk of overtopping and potential dam failure during periods of high flow. Additionally, diversionary spillways can provide increased operational flexibility for managing water levels and flows.

The diversionary tactic of dropping miniature parachutist mannequins went quite well, as did the counterfeit inflatable ships and tanks that German observers reported. Operation Overlord was preceded by Operation Bodyguard. See link.
Well, even mountains eventually crumble. Even simple structures such as dams may fail when the dam becomes full with sediment, with no storage space left. This is the ultimate fate of all dams, other than diversionary weirs.
True, the lemon-drop plan was not enacted. It was a proposed military maneuver during World War II by General George S. Patton as a diversionary tactic, but it was deemed too risky and never put into action.
Metellus Cimber engages Caesar's attention by approaching him with a seemingly innocent request. He kneels down and appeals to Caesar to reconsider his decision to banish his brother, Publius Cimber. This diversionary tactic distracts Caesar and momentarily turns his attention away from the gathering conspirators.
