It is a place in Turkey where the British and French launched a campaign in 1915. The idea was to knock Turkey out of the war, but the Turks put up a strong resistance, and the campaign was a costly failure.
The Gallipolli campaign lasted for 8 months, 2 weeks and a day. It was fought on 25 April 1915 - 9 January 1916.

In Turkey during the Gallipolli campaign, and on the Western Front in France and Belgium. Also in Palestine in the Middle East. The ANZACs (Australia - New Zealand Army Corps) were the Imperial shock troops on the Western Front, very highly regarded by friend and foe.
I don't know how they felt emotionally, if that is what you're trying to find out. Fact is, however, that the Australians fought against the Turks during the battle of Gallipolli. So I don't think the Australians considered the Turks to be their 'mates'. The reason the Australians fought against the Turks, was probably the pressure put on them by Great Britain. I don't know how willing they were to actually fight the Turks though.
During World War I, the Gallipoli Campaign was caused by the creative, if also risky, planning of British war leaders. Their goal was to strike at the heart of the Ottoman Empire, ally of Germany and Austria, and cause a quick surrender which would seriously weaken the Central Powers. Their plan failed in the face of stout Ottoman resistance once the campaign started.

As you might expect - it took place at Gallipolli - which is a peninsula in Turkish Thrace. To the west of Gallipolli is the Agean Sea. To the east is the Sea of Mamara (with the Dardannelles running between the two along the southwest coast of the Gallipolli peninsula. Pretty much the entire battle was confined to the southwestern tip of the peninsula and a some of the northwestern beach contiguous to it.
