The War of the Roses was a struggle for the throne of England between two branches of the Royal line, as the long-reigning King Henry the Sixth was mentally unstable. It was fought with very small armies, and most citizens were probably unaware that it was happening at all. But nearly all the front-running candidates were killed, and the unknown Welshman, Henry Tudor, gambled on the unpopularity of King Richard the Third, whom he defeated and killed at Bosworth in 1485. This moment is reckoned as the end of the Middle Ages in England.

The English Civil War (1642-48) concerned the right of the monarch to levy taxes without permission of Parliament - 'Divine Right of Kings'. This war involved much larger numbers, and most civilians were expected to take one side or the other. The Parliamentarians were led by Oliver Cromwell, probably the best General that England has ever produced, and after having the King executed, became Lord Protector of the Realm. (Interestingly, the two sides from the English Civil War are clearly represented in the two sides from the American Civil War - in some cases, the same families.)

The two nicknames for the English Civil War?

There have been several civil wars in England, the most famous of which is simply referred to as the "English Civil War" where Charles I marched into parliament, looking for 5 Members of Parliament that had tried to commit treason, thereby causing civil war. (As the royal family are not allowed to enter the house of commons) You may be thinking of the Baron's war, in which King John had refused to abide by the Magna Carta he had previously issued. Perhaps, however, most famously, you are thinking of the War of the Roses, the fighting between the houses of Lancaster and York (whos symbols are respectively the red and white rose) for dominance of the British throne. The war was ended when Henry VII, or "Henry Tudor", a relatively unknown bloke from Lancaster house defeated Richard III, and married Elizabeth of York, to unite the two houses.

What two families fought the war of roses?

There were no nations fighting in the Wars of the Roses, merely two different "families", the house of Lancaster and the house of York, both of which were descended from the sons of Edward III, so technically they were all of the same family, the Wars of the Roses is often called "The Cousin's War" by some historians. The House Of Lancaster (Red Rose) & The House Of York (White Rose).
