Cavalry were primarily scouts, and quick-response troops. Being on horseback, they could move easily, but they weren't able to attack effectively while moving. They needed to stop to fire and reload muskets or rifles, and were primarily armed with sabers or light lances, which require close contact to attack.

Cavalry rarely were successful attacking heavy infantry or pike squares, and lost all effectiveness with the advent of the repeating rifle.
