The rank of generals varies by country and military structure, but generally, it is one of the highest officer ranks. In many countries, the rank of general is typically above colonel and may include various levels such as brigadier general, major general, lieutenant general, and four-star general. Each level has specific responsibilities and authority, often commanding large units or divisions. The exact hierarchy and titles can differ significantly between nations and their armed forces.
Four-star generals are the highest rank in the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps, denoting a senior officer with significant command authority. Notable four-star generals include Dwight D. Eisenhower, who commanded Allied forces during World War II; Douglas MacArthur, known for his role in the Pacific Theater; and Colin Powell, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This rank is often associated with leadership during major military operations and strategic planning.

All information gleaned from the following website: www.history.navy.mil/trivia/triv4-5m.htm Originally the King was the ultimate commander in times of war. He appointed Captains to run the wars. They were termed " Captain Generals" to denoted their rank of head of the war effort in an overall or "general" sphere of operations. If the Captain Generals had too much on their plate, they appoint assistants or Lieutenants. They took the name Lieutenant Generals. The suppley and administration of small units were usually done by the Sergeant Major, sooo when the Captain General needed some good admin guys he appointed men as Sergeant Major Generals. Colonels ran Regiments. When there were too many Regiments for the existing Generals to have effective control , they created Brigades who were then commanded by Brigadiers General. Over the years as the scope and specifics of the various duties changed, the prefixes were many times dropped, so we had Generals, Lieutenant Generals Major Generals and Brigadier Generals.
