Severe disruption of the infrastructure that supported the Confederate armies in the field. By the time they surrendered, they were barefoot and starving.

Also a sharp lesson to any other states thinking of seceding from the USA. These punitive raids on the farms and wrecking of the railroads registered deeply on the Southern mind.

The end result was a shortening of the war by months, at almost nil casualties. And a new style of military campaigning, now called Total War.

Furthermore it represented the successful realisation of a decisive strategic manoeuvre aiming to take from the back the Confederate Eastern Front.

General Lee, subject to a heavy siege by Grant's army, was practically immobilized there and had no possibility to displace troops to prevent Sherman's army to reach that task.
