The decline of the mountain men era was primarily caused by several factors. The depletion of fur-bearing animals due to overhunting significantly impacted their livelihood. Additionally, the rapid westward expansion of settlers and the establishment of towns disrupted the wilderness and made the fur trade less lucrative. Finally, the decline in demand for beaver pelts and the availability of alternative materials for clothing further contributed to the end of the mountain men era.
The mountain men era ended because the beaver was almost drove to extinction in that area and because of fashion. The change of fashion caused the mountain men era to end.

Mountain Men had to be resourceful simply because the had no one to rely on. In most cases these men were several weeks ride from any civilization. With no room for error, or a Wal-Mart in sight, they had to make the best out of the situation at hand. If you want to see a good movie on Mountain Men and how they survived, I suggest Jerimiah Johnson with Robert Redford.
