The first use of gas in a war was used in world war one.
Cruise missles, ballistic missles, jet aircraft and rocket aircraft were all used by Germany, Britain introduced radar to warfare and nuclear weapons were employed by the US.
The Union was the North and the Confederate States were the South.
World War I saw the introduction of several new technologies that transformed warfare, including the use of tanks, which provided mobility and protection on the battlefield. Airplanes were also utilized for reconnaissance and later for combat, marking the beginning of aerial warfare. Additionally, machine guns became more advanced, leading to devastating firepower, while poison gas introduced a new and terrifying method of attack. These innovations significantly changed military strategy and tactics during the conflict.
Of course (while not entirely new) the proliferation of the machine gun forced the type of warfare that ensued.

They were introduced to help win the war. It was a new weapon and there was little, initially, that could be done to stop them.
