It was New Guinea in early to mid 1942 as part of the Kokoda Track campaign. Subsequently Guadalcanal, from August 1942 into early 1943 was a major Allied victory in the Solomon Islands campaign. Even though it was a comparatively early success, it led inexorably to the defeat and surrender of Japan.
The last two islands captured in the Pacific in 1945, were also the bloodiest; Iwo Jima & Okinawa.
The Pacific islands were chosen and served as steppingstones to move north toward Japan.

D-Day is thought to mean an amphibious landing (which is not the case). There were many amphibious landings in the Pacific Theater as each island had to be taken. Sometimes there were multiple landings for one island or chain of islands. This is why the Marines played was mainly used in the Pacific and not in the European theaters.
The Pacific islands were attacked and seized during the Allied island hopping campaign primarily to gain strategic military bases and to cut off Japanese supply lines. Capturing these islands allowed the Allies to establish airfields and naval bases, facilitating further advances toward Japan. This strategy aimed to bypass heavily fortified Japanese positions, reducing casualties and accelerating the push towards eventual victory in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Admiral Chester Nimitz along with his men attacked Japanese-held islands in the Pacific through what is termed a "leap frog" or "island hopping" manner.
Wake Island is a US possession in the Central Pacific, west of Midway. When WW2 started the Japanese attacked the island on December 8, 1941 with the intent to invade & seize the island from the US Marines stationed there. The US Marines successfully beat off the first invasion attempt, and held out until December 23, 1941. Wake Island was also home to the Pan American Clipper (amphibious aircraft) airline base between the US & Asia. Japanese brutality & murder of civilians & military personnel on the island became known during the war.
