"The Abolitionist Movement: Fighting Slavery and

Racial Injustice from the Revolution to the Civil War," a "We The People" Summer

Seminar for School Teachers sponsored by the National Endowment for the

Humanities and hosted by the Library Company of Philadelphia. This year's seminar

will be held at the Library Company from June 20st through July 16th, 2010. I am

delighted to be directing the seminar for the third time. It last ran in 2008 with great

success! Many of the people who have attended in previous years still keep in touch

with each other and we all share stories of teaching triumphs, new career paths, and

future plans. I very much look forward to working with a new set of teaching

professionals in 2010 and hope you will consider applying to the seminar.

It was the primary cause of the Civil War- Southern states wanted to keep it, Northern states wanted to get rid of it.

As Northern states passed laws forbidding slavery in their territory, Southern states feared that Northern politicians would start trying to pass Federal Laws to abolish it. Abraham Lincoln, an abolitionist Republican, took advantage of infighting in the Democratic Party to get elected president in 1860, and these pro-slavery Southern states began seceding from the Union. Then when secessionist forces began shooting at union forces at Fort Sumter, South Carolina in spring 1861, the US Civil War had begun.

It helped cause the war by helping slaves escape to the North and farther into the south (Mexico and Cuba).
