"The Abolitionist Movement: Fighting Slavery and
Racial Injustice from the Revolution to the Civil War," a "We The People" Summer
Seminar for School Teachers sponsored by the National Endowment for the
Humanities and hosted by the Library Company of Philadelphia. This year's seminar
will be held at the Library Company from June 20st through July 16th, 2010. I am
delighted to be directing the seminar for the third time. It last ran in 2008 with great
success! Many of the people who have attended in previous years still keep in touch
with each other and we all share stories of teaching triumphs, new career paths, and
future plans. I very much look forward to working with a new set of teaching
professionals in 2010 and hope you will consider applying to the seminar.

Douglass's Role in the Civil War: African Americans were ready and willing to fight in the Civil War, but President Lincoln and Union leaders were not sure how they felt about enlisting black troops. By 1860, Douglass was well known for his efforts to end slavery and his skill at public speaking. During the Civil War, Douglass was a consultant to President Abraham Lincoln and helped convince him that slaves should serve in the Union forces and that the abolition of slavery should be a goal of the war.

Abraham Lincoln played a significant role in ending slavery as he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, declaring that all slaves in Confederate territory were to be set free. He also supported the passage of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery throughout the United States. Lincoln's presidency and his commitment to ending slavery were crucial in shaping the eventual outcome of the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery.
Slavery played a significant role in Delaware's history, as it was a slave state prior to the Civil War. Enslaved individuals were used to work on farms, in households, and in industries throughout the state. Delaware's gradual emancipation laws led to the gradual abolition of slavery in the state.
The extension of slavery was not caused by the Civil War; rather, the Civil War was a consequence of the deepening divide over slavery's expansion into new territories and states. Debates surrounding the Missouri Compromise, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and other legislative efforts highlighted the tensions between free and slave states. Ultimately, the conflict over slavery's role in American society contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861.
