Harry Truman authorized the use of atomic bombs against Japan.
President Harry Truman had to decide whether to use the newly-built atomic bomb against the Japanese. He finally decided to use it to protect American lives that would be lost if Japan was invaded.
Truman did not specifically order either the first or second atomic bombings, actual orders for them were given in the field in accordance with his order. His order to use the atomic bomb on Japan was a blanket order, to drop the bombs as soon as they became available for use unless ordered otherwise. The third bomb did not become available until Japan had announced its intention to surrender, so it was not used.A grand total of 23 atomic bombs were scheduled for production in 1945. Had Japan not surrendered when they did Truman's original order authorized dropping them all on Japan with no more action on his part.
The atomic bomb was used to end the war between the U.S. and Japan. The U.S. also dropped it to test the bomb to see if it worked. When the bomb passed the test the U.S. told Japan that we will drop an atomic bomb; Japan refused to surrender and we dropped two bombs on them (Hiroshima and Nagasaki); that's when Japan surrendered. In modern terms, atomic bombs (and all nuclear weapons) are political tools, with very little practical battlefield use. In some regards, they can be considered a "terror" weapon, as possession of nuclear weaponry provides the owner with a credible threat to wreck mass destruction upon an opponent. That is, the utility of nuclear weapons comes not from their use, but from the threat of their use. As such, they are classic political tools for use in international power relations.
An ultimatum was issued to Japan from Potsdam, but no mention of atomic bombs was made in it as they were classified and the only people at Potsdam cleared to discuss them were Truman and Churchill. The first time the Japanese were told of the atomic bomb was after the bombing of Hiroshima.
they surrendered.

To the defeat of Japan.
Japan would not surrender prolonging on the war
President Truman got the order to use them against Japan.
Japan refused to surrender. Japan did not believe in surrender, and hated people who did surrender instead of dying to the last person. Pres. Truman dropped two atomic bombs on Japan and Japan surrendered. It was either two atomic bombs or invasion of Japan. Invasion of Japan would mean that the war would last another year and kill a lot more people than the atomic bombs did. Japan surrendered after Nagasaki was bombed, not after Hiroshima. It was either the atomic bombs or invasion. Atomic bombs were the lesser of two evils.
