There are two countries that you don't want to mess with, Russia and Afghanistan. They may not be as successful as many other countries, but they sure know how to defend themselves. Especially Afghanistan, they have never been defeated and even the mighty US is leaving their country with defeat.
Switzerland remained neutral because it was largely inaccessible - very difficult to attack and occupy. Netherlands and Belgium remained neutral for the opposite reason - they were too accessible from either side.
