Most people think D-Day stands for dooms day. It doesn't. D-Day actually stands for Day-Day. The whole idea of D-Day was so they could break the German barrier and work their way farther into France and eventually make their way into Germany. Most people think that the whole idea for the beach invasion was so that they could get into Germany and free the Jews from the concentration camps. It was not. Nobody except the wealthy Germans and the Nazi's knew about the camps. The only way the US troops found out was because when the second platoon of the 101st airborne division dropped into Germany they saw a strange looking complex with smoke coming out of a giant coal chamber. They then called the Easy Company Platoon to go and check out the building and then got an idea of what was going on. the way they really found out was when they found Anne Frank's secret hideout already broken into, they found a diary under the bed and it had stories that Anne wrote about the concentration camps ad why they were hiding. That's really how we found out about the concentration camps. I hope this answer will help you with whatever you are researching for!
