Much of the French infrastructure had been badly damaged in World War 2 and the country had been plundered by the Nazis. In this respect, France was no different from other countries that had been invaded and occupied by the Nazis. However, France suffered from political instability throughout the period c. 1946-1958. It was rare for a French government at that time to stay in office for more than about 18 months. After World War 2 France fought two major colonial wars, the first in Indochina, where it suffered a severe defeat at the hands of the Vietminh and had to pull out in 1954. The second colonial war was in Algeria and was fought in two stages between 1954 and 1962. As Algeria was legally a part of Metropolitan France and many French people had settled there, this war was a highly emotive issue that tended to destablize French politics. In fact, in 1961 some of the French military tried to oust President de Gaulle ... Despite all these problems France made a good recovery from World War 2, though it was somewhat slower than in some other European countries.
