Hitler attempted to defeat Britain by attempting to gain air superiority over Britain. Hitler conducted a bombing campaign that began by attacking shipping centers and coastal shipping convoys and eventually moved to attacking areas of political significance and terror bombing.

Hitler planned to launch Operation Sea Lion, a naval invasion of Britain, but before he could do this he needed air superiority. The result was the battle of Britain, a large air battle across all of Britain, the Germans would have won if not for changing tactics (going for civilian targets to lower morale, rather then military targets that could have had crippling consequences for the British). The Germans lost the Battle of Britain, therefore, no air superiority, no Operation Sea Lion.

The Battle of Britain was a pre-cursor to Hitler's plan to invade Britain. Before the invasion could take place, the Royal Air Force planes and airfields had to be destroyed but the Luftwaffe were unable to do this. German aircraft losses were so high that Hitler abandoned his plans for an invasion.
