During World War I, barbed wire was extensively used as a defensive measure to protect trenches and other military positions. It served to impede enemy advances, slow down infantry assaults, and create obstacles that were difficult to navigate. The wire was often strung across no-man's land, making it a critical component of trench warfare and contributing to the stalemate that characterized much of the conflict. Its presence not only caused physical injury but also demoralized attackers, highlighting the brutal nature of the war.
Barbed wire was used to keep the trench enemies away from the soldiers in case they come for attack.

Barbed wire is used as a defensive obstacle that prevents enemy soldiers from attacking an army's position. Barbed wire injures soldiers and entangles their clothes in order to slow their advance. During World War I, armies created several bands of barbed wire defenses that prevented their enemies from launching successful infantry attacks. Because armies at the time were composed primarily of infantry, the use of barbed wire helped create a military stalemate between the Allies and the Central Powers. Its importance as a military defense declined when armies began using airplanes and tanks, which are not affected by barbed wire.
Greatly used in front of the trenches during World War I, the barbed wire had a defensive function to prevent or hinder an enemy frontal attack. Lines of coiled barbed wire were also used for defence in World War II, and in other theatres of war.

One of the differences between World war one and the American civil war was in terms of technology. The weapons used in World War One were more technologically advanced than the weapons used in the American Civil War. For example, the World War One was fought with machine guns, poison gas, tanks, planes and barbed wire, although barbed wire was not new it was still the first time it was used in a war, while the American Civil War was fought with rifles and bayonets. Another difference is the reason behind the war. World War One was fought because the next in line for Austria-Hungary's throne was killed and the allies of Austria-Hungary and Serbia all helped out so a small war turned into a World War. The American Civil War was very different, it was fought over the rights to have slaves.
