Hitler had utmost respect for Japan. He knew that Japan had defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. And had bitterly contested the Russians again at the battle of Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan) in 1939; for a man planning on attacking Russia, he needed such a country with a reputation for fighting Russia (and getting away with it!). Hitler also knew that Japan had one of the most, if not "the" most battle tested Navies in the world. Hitler was strictly "Land Minded", and knew it. Teaming up with a strong navy was just "what the doctor ordered!"
