The English Civil War was being fought because Puritans thought the King was acting illegally in the name of England, a protestant country, by setting up Catholic churches, as influenced by the King's Catholic wife. They then went to war, and it was basically the people versus the King, and there was not just one war, there were three. Oliver Cromwell was the leader of the people's side and he was a strong believer of democracy, so as the war raged on, some new reasons were added, like making England into a democracy. Once the war was over and the people won, the King was executed and the title of monarch was dissolved. However, the English people weren't ready for such a huge step towards democracy, so they offered Cromwell the crown. Cromwell refused, but did go back to Parliament. When he got there he decided to just take over the country as Lord Protectorate, not necessarily a king. The irony is that Cromwell just went to war all these years to get rid of an autocracy, and he made England into an even bigger autocracy than it was before the war.

Disruption to civilian life caused by the English civil war was localised and limited because the number of combatants involved was limited in relation to the total population of England at that time. The total number of troops involved on both sides rarely exceeded 25,000 in relation to a total English population of around 5.5 million. The largest battle of the civil war was Marston Moor involving 45,000 men in June 1644. The 'hot' war lasted from the battle of Edge hill in October 1642 to the decisive battle of Naseby in June 1645 but action was sporadic and localised.
