During World War II, the "Atlantic Wall", the name given to the coastline of Western Europe being defended by German (and their allied) troops, stretched from the far southwestern corner of France to the northwestern corner of Germany itself and then northwards along the Norwegian coast. Although portions of this coastal defense line were only weakly defended, its overall length stretched to over 3,000 miles in total.
