The abolitionist John Brown (1800-1859) was involved in the killing of five people in the Pottawatomie massacre, as a leader of an anti-slavery group in Kansas in 1856. Three years later, he was captured, tried, and executed for his attack on the armory at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.

The group of people during the Civil War that were opposed to slavery were referred to as abolitionists. One of the most famous abolitionists was Benjamin Franklin, who was a leading member of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery, one of the first formal organizations for abolition in the United States.
John Brown, several of his sons, and other abolitionists attacked and took over the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry in Virginia. Their goal was to obtain arms and distribute them to slaves in order to begin a slave revolt in Virginia. They hoped the revolt would spread and help bring an end to slavery. No slaves took up Brown's offer. He was hanged in December of 1859 for treason. He left a legacy of being a man of freedom and justice, however, that ignores the murders he was accused of in Kansas.

Brown was sure he could create a slave uprising in Virginia. He tried to recruit Afro American scholar Frederick Douglas into the scheme without success. Brown's plan was to capture the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry and he and his 22 recruits would scatter about the slave plantations and urge them to join a revolt. Brown had indeed captured the arsenal and its weapons, however, no slave insurrection ensued and Brown was captured and later executed.
