Cotton plantations in the Southern States brought wealth and prosperity to America. Great Britain was one of the biggest customers for Southern cotton.
The Southern part of the United States, particularly the states that were part of the Confederacy during the Civil War, based wealth on the amount of land and number of slaves owned. This system of wealth was built on the plantation economy that relied heavily on slave labor for agriculture.
Tobacco, cotton and other products were grown for trade in the southern US. Cotton was also sent to the northern manufacturing plants.

Some Southern States wanted the wealth brought to them by slavery, and they wanted not to be swamped by ballots by the more populated Northern States, so a compromise was reached.
