Allied forces captured the final island nation of Iwo Jima. At the time the atom bomb was dropped to try to end the war ( it did not end the war), there were millions of troops within about 2 weeks from invading Japan. If this had happened, millions of Japanese civilians would have been killed - they would have fought the Allies to the death. Hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers also would have been killed. fortunately, the dropping of the hydrogen bomb on Nagasaki caused the Japanese Army to give up. ( Most of the Japanese Navy had been wanting peace for at least a year, at that point.)
