The Temperance movement was a movement in the US to control alcohol consumption amongst citizens. The movement suggested that alcohol had negative impacts such as chronic unemployment, spouse abuse and family neglect. By 1800, the movement had accomplished the burn of whiskey production in eight states.
Because the immigrants of the late 1800s and early 1900s were largely from Eastern and Southern Europe and drank alcohol.
