Women contributed much to the war effort. While men were at the war front, women had to take the jobs usually reserved for men. Women began working the factories and creating the guns, bullets, aircraft, you name it! Some women even dressed up as men to try to fight for their country. Both women and men contributed much to the Allied victory.
The northern factories was known as 90 "the nation's manufacturing output."
People grew gardens in their yards called Victory Gardens so the soldiers could have more food. Women worked in production factories to help the war effort. People gave metal cans, toys and spare peices to the government so it could be used to build weapons.

Rosie the Riveter was the name of the fictitious character who encouraged women to be industrial.
She didn't change the world, but represented the women who were working in the factories building the tanks and planes. During the war the government provided day care for the children of the women who worked in the factories, but as soon as the war was over they were expected to go back home and the child care was stopped. Women were returned to the status of housewives until the late 1970's and they still were not allowed to work many jobs, have credit in their own name, or attend some graduate schools. In 1990 I had to get my exhusband's signature to have my own car insurance. No, Rosie didn't change the world.
